Congratulations to Marilyn Waller and the Community Day Committee for another great event on Saturday, July 26th. The Democrats gave out lots of yard signs, registered some voters, and found ourselves a few more interested volunteers. It was another great effort, thanks everyone!


On July 5, 2008, The Oglethorpe Democrats participated in the Second Annual Independence Day Celebration in Crawford with a parade entry and a booth at the festival. On May 22, 2008, The Oglethorpe Democrats hosted a Democratic Candidates Forum for local, district and statewide candidates. Seven local Democratic candidates participated: Sheriff Mike Smith, up for re-election, Kelli Paradise Smith for Clerk of Court, incumbent Commissioner Marilyn Stone, Henry Sims and Larry Nackerud for County Commission District 2, Jamie Lewis for County Commission District 5, Marilyn Waller for Board of Education District 2; as well as Tim Riley for State Senate District 47, and Jim Powell for Public Service Commission.

On May 3, the Oglethorpe Democrats held a successful barbeque/yard sale fundraiser at the Crawford Depot to support our candidates. The Democratic Committee is very grateful to our dedicated volunteers who worked so hard to make this event possible, to Mr. Joe Baughns, emcee, and to local celebrity Delbra Favors who entertained the crowd with uplifting gospel music. On January 30, 2008, a small delegation from Oglethorpe County attended the DPG's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner honoring Georgia Giants Max Cleland and John Lewis, and a rally for Hillary Clinton at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. On December 15, about 65 guests from seven area counties joined the Madison and Oglethorpe County Democrats at Watson Mill State Park for a Democratic Homecoming with special guest, Jane Kidd, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia. More photos available here...

One highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of the Oglethorpe Democrats Volunteer of the Year Award to Eleanor Jean Edwards (left). Guest speaker Jane Kidd addresses the group (right).

On November 7, 2007, the newly-chartered OCHS Young Democrats Club welcomed former State Representative and current Chairman of the Democratic Party of Georgia, Jane Kidd. She spoke about growing up in Georgia politics and suggested different ways for the students to become involved and to stimulate political interest and awareness among their peers. The Young Democrats meet twice monthly and have hosted regular speakers including Laura Floyd of the Oglethorpe Democrats and Payton Bradford and Louis Elrod of the UGA Young Democrats. Ms. Kidd is pictured center, along with YD members and sponsor Cathryn Brooks (far right).


August 2007: the Oglethorpe County Democratic Party made the front page of the Echo as the first organization in the county to successfully "Adopt-a-Highway."


Secretary Amy Glinski organized an information booth at Oglethorpe County Community Day on July 29, 2007. Volunteers handed out free water, Democratic Party platform cards, voter registration forms and absentee ballot applications.


Oglethorpe, Madison and Clarke County Democrats had a great time at the 2007 Colbert July 4 Parade, handing out 1,000 promotional fans to spectators along the parade route and at the festival booth.

Members of the Oglethorpe County Democratic Committee, Concerned Men of Oglethorpe County and the Oglethorpe County NAACP were proud to welcome Georgia Labor Commissioner Michael L. Thurmond to a special Prayer Breakfast at the Oglethorpe County Library on Saturday, April 7, 2007. Other speakers at the event included Pastor Dwight Sims, Pastor Clarence Burgess, President of the Oglethorpe NAACP and Democratic candidates for the Special Election in the 10th Congressional District.
